Absolute pleasure! The dynamic between Hawthorne & Horowitz is hilarious. The plot, the pacing, the story is brilliant. But, also it’s fun!

β€œThe Sentence is Death” is the second book of the Hawthorne & Horowitz series and truly can be a standalone. There is nothing in this book that would spoil anything from the β€œThe Word is Murder.” You don’t need to read the first one to understand who Horowitz and Hawthorne are or what brings this unlikely duo together.

This book/series is not for everyone. It is not a thriller but a classic cut and dry, old-school β€œwhodunnit.” As with the first installment, I found myself laughing out loud at Hawthorne and his dry antics that crawl under Horowitz’s skin. It was okay, but I didn’t find myself reaching for it quite like its predecessor. I plan to continue the series in hopes the next three books keep my attention more.

I guessed the culprit pretty early on simply due to the writing style. I continued onward because I thought I may have been wrong.

Read this one. Do not listen to it. The same narrator as the first book narrates this one. I liked him for the first book, but not this one. He made his voice very high pitched when reading dialogue spoken by women and other various characters described by the author to have high pitched voices. It was like nails on a chalkboard for me.

Anthony Horowitz returns as himself, along with the still-annoying detective Hawthorne. This one had a bit more padding, and a few obvious side mysteries, but otherwise Horowitz has still crafted an entertaining sequel. Nonetheless, the novelty of the series is wearing thin.

3,5 rounded up. Another witty mystery with the ex-cop and author. There were a couple obvious red herrings but entertaining enough characters for me to keep reading. I plan to continue on with the series.

Another light, fun mystery by Horowitz. I did get a little annoyed at times with the characters, but thinking about it, I suppose that kept them real and not just two-dimensional cardboard types.
