After discovering what has made their mother so very ill, Cris and Clem start out on an adventure to see what exactly is going on with their family and when it all started.
This story was filed with twist and turns all along the way. Every page learning one more piece of this families history. We are reminded through our text that family is everything and at times they need to show up for each other even if they don't want too.
An excellent read if you are just getting into magic realism or urban fantasy!

I really enjoyed listening to Blood Debts! I picked it up at the strong recommendation from folks in the bookish community, and I’m very surprised that it doesn’t have more reviews.
I finished this about a week ago and honestly don’t remember much of it. This, unfortunately, is going to lower the rating for me a bit–it hasn’t stuck with me like I would have liked.
I really liked how this book handled sex. Lots of reviewers here are criticizing the book for including sex in the relationships of our two main characters since they’re minors. However, those thoughts and scenes were clearly not written for the pleasure of the reader; I found them to be well-written age-appropriate explorations of sex.
The plot, generally speaking, was pretty predictable, but in this case, I can’t say that I hold it against the text. It’s clearly written for a younger audience than me, but it’s not simple to the point of talking down to the reader.
We explore themes of generational trauma, racism, closed culture magic, and mental illness. The author does a great job of handling mental health in this book, and I liked that it felt nuanced and age-appropriate.
It’s very surprising to me to see so many low ratings–I really enjoyed this story! I will definitely be continuing this series & reading more from this author.

Really poignant story of a black family in New Orleans! Loved the origin story of the magic! Loved the dichotomy of Cris and Clement and their relation to justice! Really intriguing! Don’t really know why we got pov of characters we only saw once. I was so sad for Clement and Yves, they didn’t deserve that! I was not expecting the dead scene to play out like that at the end! Wishing for some toxic yuri in the sequel! Also what a cliffhanger!

Didn’t pick up for me until page 260, everything before that felt slow.

Clunky worldbuilding and dialog, but the family dynamics were interesting.
Could have done without the sex scene
