This is adorable and exciting and made me emotional. The romance subplot is a little predictable though.

Realistic fiction. Usually not my thing, but this is a sports book, and the Red Lake Warriors have a goal of taking the basketball team all the way to state this year. There's some romance drama (it is high school after all), and some excessive partying (ditto). The main kid, Tre, is a sweet boy, and he and his family are still working through the grief left by his brother's death in a car accident. I couldn't necessarily always picture what was going on during the games as described, but I could still feel the tension like I was there rooting for the Warriors. And if you don't like sportsball, those parts are easy to skim through to get back to the relationship stuff. Because even without Tre being in a direct romance, he and his teammates still have to work together, and there are some big personalities there, leading to some big confrontations (although not quite as big as you might expect).

I picked this book up ahead of a book fest in which Graves is the keynote speaker. This book really digs into life on the reservation and the role that basketball plays for not just kids, but the whole community.  The characters move through powerful moments of growth, struggle, and triumph and it's all balances with a measaured humor that reminds us that life isn't easy, in fact it downright sucks sometimes, but there is a balance there that helps us find our way through.
