a reread. always good. she deserves the clout sartre has as a thinker (GENERALLY. not just as a feminist), and she is far superior as a novelist. these times make existentialism very appealing

That was intense. Specially the last story, it left me with tight chest.
The ranking would've been higher if it weren't for the second story.

Posh, bored and neurotic french women trouble themselves about family life and bourgeoisie gender roles. Outdated and annoying characters. Is this why 2nd wave feminist failed to make things better for future generations?

The Woman Destroyed is made up of three stories, each focusing on women in middle age facing big life changes. These are women whose kids are grown, whose marriages are falling apart, and who are trying to figure out who they are without those roles to hold onto.

The Age of Discretion: The story follows a woman who feels her work is no longer important and whose relationship with her son is changing. I read it during a stressful time, so I don’t remember all the details, but I do remember being moved by it.

The Monologue: From what I could gather, the woman in this story is breaking down after the loss of a child and a divorce, and now her second marriage is crumbling too. It’s written in a jumbled, stream-of-consciousness style that was the hardest for me to get through.

The Woman Destroyed: It’s told through diary entries as a woman named Monique slowly realizes her husband is having an affair. She tries to hold onto her marriage while being eaten alive by doubt, fear, and jealousy. Even though there isn’t a lot of plot, it’s incredibly emotional and tense.
