Peril at End House

Agatha Christie

3.92 AVERAGE

This one felt really good. Plenty of Poirot, and good characters.
But I never understand if I'm supposed to like or dislike Hastings as he's annoying in every book and not in an amusing way. Poirot singing his praises of 'imagination' and whatnot and yet all he does is reply "but you don't REALLY think that?" to all theories and Poirot even throws a dig at him at the end saying his hunches are always off.

A murder that has not yet taken place. Will it or can Poirot find the killer before it does?

Peril at the End House starts rather unusually. My first thoughts were "This is not going to be a good read." Eh Bien, I was wrong. Agatha Christie can weave a mystery out of anything including something that hasn't yet happened. In this book, she intertwines the life of a non-descript young girl with that of Detective Poirot and Hastings with grace and poise that only a writer of Christie's standard can achieve. The book starts off slowly but accelerates halfway. The setting of the English Country House right opposite the Majestic, blended well with each of the affluent characters and was a reflection of Poirot's success as a detective.

The camaraderie between Poirot and Hastings was natural and sassy as ever. I did however find Poirot very very rude and egoistic and not at the top of his game. This was one of the things that felt off to me. The writing style was sharper than usual, with a tinge of jealousy and betrayal that upheld the story.

The hero here nevertheless is the mystery. There was a subtlety to the crime that was probable but seemed impossible to the reader. As with every book, I had my own theories as to who the murderer would be but as usual, I was wrong. Christie had woven a beautiful and intricate book with misdirections and false suspicions, but with a simple, well-crafted solution. The ending was absolutely satisfying and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a well-thought plot!

One of my favorites with a twist ending that isn't obvious. The characters are interesting, and the mystery keeps you on your toes, trying to figure it out.

Christie is so comforting to me. This one was particularly detail-oriented. Perfect for a long flight.

I really liked this one! It reminded me a lot of Murder on the Links, which is still my favorite Agatha Christie book so far. I’d love to give it 5 stars, but I’m saving that for my absolute all-time favorites—so I’ll go with a solid 4.75.

All I can say is: clever girl.
She had Poirot stumped—though, of course, not for long! It felt more like he momentarily forgot than actually got outwitted, but still… a great twist.
