I got this book expecting a nice bio of Milicent Patrick, but was blown away by a story about a woman erased from history by a jealous man and a much misogyny. Every true fan of Creature From The Black Lagoon knows she was the creature's creator, but little else was known about her, and WOW prepare to be amazed! Your journey along with the author is just one revelation after another.
I downed this book in one evening. Why is this not a Tim Burton movie, like, yesterday?!

Mallory O'Meara does the forgotten legacy of an early icon in Female animation, film artistry and special effects design.

The story of Millicent Patrick is one that sady resonates into current times. how male ego and entitlement robbed her not only of her passion filled career but the credit and legacy that should be awarded over her impressive and influential career.

From her early childhood growing up in the iconic Hearst Castle, to being one of the first Disney animators (creating the iconic Chernabog/Bald Mountain sequence in Fantasia) to the instant icon of 'Gilman' from the Creature from the black lagoon.

O'Meara finds her footing in this almost autobiography, the charm and excitement of this title comes in her journey to find the pieces of Patrick's life. From libraries to the morman research institute, she leaves no stone unturned.

The casual and sometimes tongue in cheek tone might turn some people off, I found it endearing and a major benefit to the storytelling as the story picked up but I can see some people being bothered by the feminist rhetoric and self projection if they thought they were getting a BTS look at the production of an iconic film.

Exploring the legacy of such a forgotten and uncredited icon seems difficult and the passion and perseverance to create this book is worth note.

Loving horror and the stories behind the iconic creatures this book has been on my radar for a long while, I'm glad I pulled the trigger. This was an interesting and provoking read.

I read this because I'm a fan of Mallory O'Meara rather than Milicent Patrick, so it didn't bother me that there is a lot of filler about her process. Ultimately, I think the author did a good job with what was available, but Patrick isn't a person who left a lot of breadcrumbs behind.

Shelved this one at 25%; might try to pick up again, but probably not any time soon.

I was intrigued by the subject matter, but I'm having a really hard time getting into O'Meara's writing. The research itself feels flimsy and the sentences kind of stilted.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While it read more as a memoir than a biography to me, I believe the intermingling of Mallory's journey researching worked well. I feel compelled to go watch all of the classic Universal monster movies and even rewatch Fantasia. As a sidenote, the tattoo lover in me really needs to see ALL of Mallory's tattoos!

Upon reread I love this even more! O'Meara is hilarious and so engaging. I devoured the whole book and instantly grabbed her next book Girly Drinks: A Women's History of Drinking even though I don't drink because she's just such a pleasure to read!

I utterly adored "The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick." As a woman who's been a horro fan her entire life (started reading Stephen King when I was 8-years-old), Milicent Patrick's contributions to the horror and sci-fi genres are monumental and should be shouted from the rooftops. Thank you to the author, Mallory O'Meara, for bringing her story to life! A solid 5/5 Creature-dripping stars.
