هذه الرواية عبارة عن سؤال: هل نخاف الموت، أم نخاف الندم في أخر لحظات حياتنا، الندم على القصص التي لم نكتب لها خاتمة، والقصص التي لم نبدأها.
”لكن يا دكتور، كيف يمكنك قضاء حياتك تخفف من معاناة الآخرين في الوقت الذي لا تضع أي اعتبار لحياتك؟“
تُحكى عن طريق طبيب نفسي على وشك التقاعد، طبيب بحاجة إلى طبيب، فلا هو يمتلك الخبرة الكافية، ولا هو يتفاعل مع مرضاه بالشكل المطلوب. لا أعرف كيف استمر طيلة هذه الفترة، ولربما كان للعمر والاقتراب من "الموت" أثر في ذلك، فهو نفسه يعاني، يعاني في فهم نفسه ولا يبذل جهدًا في ذلك، يعاني من الوحدة ولكنه يظن أن بحاجتها، يعيش طيلة الوقت في ذعر لا يعرف هو نفسه مصدره، يهاب أنه أصبح أقرب للموت، لكنه وبالرغم من هذا القرب لا يفقه فيه شيئًا.
”سألتها: ممَّ تخافين يا «أجاتا »؟
قالت: أوه، بالكاد أعرف. ممّ نخاف نحن جميعًا؟ أعتقد أن الحياة نفسها أصبحت تمثل خطرًا. إنني أخاف أن أعزف الموسيقى، وأخاف أن أكف عن العزف، وأخاف أن أدنو من الناس، وأخاف أن أبتعد عن الناس. لا مكان لي في أي مكان!“
"أجاتا" هي المريضة التي أثارت انتباه الطبيب وأيقظت فيه تساؤلات عدة، وكانت أول مريضة تفاعل معها فعلًا — لربما منذ فترة، ولربما أول مرة — "أجاتا" مريضة تدرك مرضها ولا تدركه في نفس الوقت، تدرك حالة طبيبها أكثر مما تدرك حالتها، وتساعده أكثر مما يساعدها. شخصية مثيرة للاهتمام ومرسومة بإتقانٍ شديد. تمنيت فقط لو وجِدت تفاصيل أكثر عن حالتها وجلساتها.
كانت كل الشخصيات مهمة للقصة، واقعية وإن لم يتم تناولها من جميع الجهات، لا توجد شخصية لسد الفراغ فحسب. وهذا إن دل على شيء دل على مهارة الكاتبة. اسلوب الرواية دافئ ولطيف، مناسب للقصة. أحببت طريقة تقسيم الفصول والمواضيع المطروحة، كُتِبت بطريقة جميلة ناسبت الرواية ككل، لكنني لا أعتقد أني فهمت النهاية جيدًا. هذه رواية لا تشبعك بالمرّة، فهي تعطيك مقتطفات فحسب، كافية لأن تكون محرّكةً للمشاعر، لكنها تجعلك راغبًا بالمزيد، وتتركك دون أن تلبي رغبتك هذه. أحببتها، لست أدرك كل ابعاد هذا الاعجاب، لكنني ممتنة لقراءتها. رواية عذبة، خريفية ودافئة جدًا.
”يمكن أن ينتهي بك الحال إلى أن تتحول إلى مخلوق ضئيل للغاية إذا لم يهتم بك أحد. وأحيانًا أتساءل ما إذا كان مثل هذا المخلوق يُعد إنسانًا بالمرة.“

A cute, yet not overly saccharine little story about a bitter and callous psychologist, close to retirement, overcoming his burnout and pessimistic view of life prompted by the particularly difficult case of a mysterious German woman.
It's a very short, almost "one-sitting" book, which makes the organic character development and genuinely heart-tugging moments all the more impressive. Other aspects do mildly suffer from the length, most prominently Agathe herself, who feels a bit underdeveloped and never quite breaks out of the tragic manic pixie role.
Still, it's a nice, quick, easy read with an earnest emotional core and some realistic depiction of psychodynamic therapy which is well worth the ~3hrs.

The novel is too shallow and obvious. The supposedly intriguing eponymous character is portrayed as a mentally-ill manic pixie dream girl to the 70-something-year-old psychiatrist protagonist. So many things such as mental illness, patient-doctor relationship, capitalism, isolation and more could be dissected, but the novel resorts to a lazier resolution to the story.

This book was so short yet it had a great inpact. About a 71 year old psychiatric longing for retirement in about six month. A woman named Agathe is determined to be his patient for a while. But at first he says no, but she doesn't take no for an answer. About loneliness and mental health, who helps who in the end? An absolute delight to read
