DNF at 52%. Had it not been a book club selection, I would have stepped away closer to 15%.

Love me a murder mystery, double-love for murder mysteries taking place over the pond, but this one was a bit of a struggle, largely because the titular "#1" is a bit misleading. Songbird unceremoniously dropped me into a universe full of characters and backstories and names - SO MANY NAMES - without context. Further research suggests that reading the DC Smith series would have helped me connect those dots, but how's a reader to know that "Kings Lake #1" doesn't actually mean "Kings Lake #1"?

Beyond that: A bit dry, a bit tedious and a bit predictable - like, I figured out the twist and killer well (well well) before the aforementioned 52% mark. Intentionally leaving this one unrated.

This book is too long and has too many details.
The investigation is done well, it becomes clear early on what the aim is. I was surprised they managed to pull it off with the evidence they had.
I did like the women in the story, they were sharp and witty. What bothered me is the fact there were a lot of references to a different series of this author where the characters are a part of and the situations from those books were referenced a lot. I like to read my series in order and now felt I missed out on a lot of details.
