Easy read. I liked how the author drew on her own family experiences to develop her characters. I edpecially liked Gussie, the precocious, curious 8 yr old granddaughter of the Adlers.

This wasn't what I was expecting, which is partly my fault for only reading the first two paragraphs of the jacket description. I thought I signed up to read about a young woman training to swim the English Channel. It's actually a family drama.
Florence dies in chapter one, and the rest of the book is about her family and friends dealing with the aftermath.
This book is full of people keeping secrets from each other, and the suspense kept building as I waited for these many complicated truths to come out.
But they never did. I feel like the ending was a cop-out.

I really enjoyed how this book is told from six character's POVs, and the setting made me feel like I was actually in summertime Atlantic City. I expected a story about a woman trying to swim the English Channel but instead I got a (sometimes boring) family saga. At the end, I found out this was a true story, which made me like it more, but I needed more from the ending.
