''That' s when Gussie saw it - the flash of color - and she looked at Anna to see if she'd seen it, too. Anna's hand moved to her mouth. The lifeguards lifted the body, pale and motionless, out of the boat and onto the sand but all Gussie could bear to look at was the red cap on her aunt's head. She covered her ears with her hands as the air filled with the sound of her grandmother's wails.''

''Stop!'' said Gussie just as he had begun moving toward the door. ''What' s our name?'' ''Name?'' ''Our club name,'' said Gussie. ''All secret clubs have names.'' ''We call ourselves the Florence Adler Swims Forever Society.''

''Florence could have laid claim to them all but there was only one thing she had ever really wanted. Anna opened her eyes. ''To swim forever.'' ''

Really enjoyed this book. Florence the girl who wants to swim forever!! Stuart, her swimming trainer and the young , rich, handsome lifeguard. Fannie, the older sister who is having a high risk pregnancy. Gussie, the sweet precious child who just wanted life to be normal.
Was it okay for Esther to keep the secret of Florence’s death to protect Fannie and the baby? The ever present horrible nature of the rise of Hitler.
It was a story of so many different storylines. But….so much to think about.
Well worth the read.

This was such a good story. A very messy set of circumstances with everyone trying to do the right thing. Set in 1934 you clearly see how the world is different with the Nazis consuming Germany and the US in denial. Jews are second class citizens even in the US. Within that larger story is the sad story of the Adlers, whose younger daughter tragically drowned and older daughter is bed ridden at the hospital with a high risk pregnancy. Everyone strives to keep the drowning death a secret from the other sister so her pregnancy has a good outcome. There are some really wonderful characters and a few despicable ones. The author describes the culture of the time very well. Overall very well done. Highly recommend.

3.5 stars
I am not sure what I expected from this book as I had not read the description but saw it on so many book lists. I was shocked to find tragedy in the beginning of the story. Ultimately, I liked the book, but there were some very unlikable characters, especially Isaac.
