While Beanland transports the reader to another era, the problems and people are nearly universal. I was totally immersed in the story and was sorry to have to return it to the library. Great for book discussion.
What a beautiful and compelling story about families, love, loss, and the sometimes unusual and difficult decisions that come with all of those. I appreciate the authors notes at the end. I never knew about the difficulties of Jewish life here in the US.

I loved this so much! I really got to know each of the characters and the story was so sweet if a little ridiculous.
3.5 stars. There are a lot of threads woven together in this lovely, sad book, but the corrosive power of secrets is at the center of them all. It is insightful, but I wish there was a bit more redemption in this one.

Interesting concept of a book especially when it is based on a true story (which I didn’t realize until the end!).
I wish the ending would have tied up more things that happened throughout. With the multiple characters viewpoints rotating, it felt like each one needed more of a conclusion.

Set in Atlantic City in 1934, "Florence Adler Swims Forever" instantly takes you back to another time in American history. Florence Adler is training to swim the English Channel when she dies during a training swim (this is not a spoiler - this is stated on the book jacket). Her unexpected death sets in a motion a string of events, the main one being that Florence's mother decides to keep Florence's death a secret from the girl's older sister.
Rachel Beanland did a wonderful job of weaving many themes together in "Florence Adler Swims Forever": family secrets, faith, anti-Semitism, love, and the things we do to protect those closest to us. While it is a work of fiction, it was a great surprise to learn that "Florence Adler..." was inspired by actual events that happened to Beanland's family.

Good story, loved that it was based on a true story. Tragic situation but characters were well developed. Some good, some bad.
