Interesting read. The biggest takeaway for me was the marginalization of Koreans in Asia was very reminiscent of the marginalization of African Americans in America. It's very interesting to see racism in another country and how the people of that time survived/transcended that situation, for some it was death and other it was denying their ethnicity.

I enjoyed seeing the evolution of these characters. I would definitely recommend this book.

I definitly enjoyed this book. the majority of the book was written about the mundane, the story between the margins of the main events. The huge main, crazy things that happened were just casually talked about years later, having felt like it skipped the whole thing. But it didn't. Because life is lived primarily in the mundane and the normal. Totally different perspective. Super cool..

4.5. Excellent character development and exceptional storytelling set in a world I previously had little knowledge about. I found this book incredibly heartbreaking while learning much about the 20th century life experience of Korean families living in Japan and abroad.
