I liked these characters, and there were several cute/funny moments in this book that made it a fairly enjoyable read. However I felt that this book had the potential to be SO much better than it was. I felt that the weakest point for this book was the character development, particularly with regard to building their relationship: lots of 'tell' instead of 'show'. I was frustrated that Wes kept saying he's loved Jamie for years, but we couldn't see specific reasons why.
I also felt that Jamie's bi-awakening happened way too fast to be believable. He went from being Wes's "straight" bestie to wanting to jump in bed with him in just a few hours, and experienced very little questioning or confusion regarding his sexuality. (Though I liked the lack of internalized homophobia)
And Jamie was supposed to be falling for Wes in real-time, yet his attraction focused far more on the physical than on actually falling in love. There were also a few moments in the writing or dialogue that felt somewhat cringey... for various reasons.
That said, I did enjoy this book enough, and like the characters enough to want to read the sequel, which I intend to do. Make of that what you will! (Keeping in mind that I AM a queer man, yet I am quite new to M/M romances)
And if it matters to anyone else like it matters to me...
