I couldn't put this book down. I love the wonderful subtle hints of the supernatural sprinkled through Jared's life. Yes, it does take awhile to get to the true supernatural elements, but I found that I actually enjoyed that. It helped set up the entire story beautifully. The author wove everything into the story in such a way that it kept me hooked. I'm definitely reading the next book.
"Close your eyes. Concentrate on your breath. Remember that you were not always earthbound. Every living creature, every drop of water and every sombre mountain is the by-blow of some bloated, dying star. Deep down, we remember wriggling through the universe as beams of light." - Eden Robinson
This has been one of my favourite books that I've read so far this year. Robinson weaves harsh realities with dry humor and surreal lore and the result is unlike any book I've read.
Something that was really unique about Son of a Trickster was the pacing. Robinson builds the story in such a meticulous and subtle way. The further you read the more crazy the story becomes. As Jared kinda feels like he's losing it a bit, I kind of felt like I was losing it too. But something about his narration kept me grounded in the plot despite how strange it became. ✨
Since I picked up this story without having read the synopsis I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. I also really enjoyed the close-to-home setting as I have lived my whole life in B.C. I am super excited to pick up the second novel in the series.

This is an interesting fantasy set in Native American culture. The magic is subtle for a lot of the book. I’m not well-versed in Native culture, so there’s a lot that went over my head.

Great characters, and strong pacing for a novel that revolves so highly around people, rather than events. This got so weird towards the end, though, bringing in quite a lot of magical realism, which I don't usually enjoy. I'm intrigued enough to continue with book two, with the hope that it doesn't completely fall apart.

Son of a Trickster took me for a bit of a wild ride. What I observed as I got to know the main character was just how many opportunities this kid had to turn bad. Whether from parents who were struggling on their own, from bullying at school, or from constant substance use, Jared was dealt a tough hand. But the inherent goodness in him shone through and this just showed to me the natural born strength some people have to carry them through tough circumstances. This made him admirable and made me root for him.
A little slow to start, but once it gets going... you're sucked in!!

I really, really liked [b:Monkey Beach|49024712|Monkey Beach|Eden Robinson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1575228798l/49024712._SY75_.jpg|314881]. It was a heart-wrenching and beautiful book. I had high hopes for this because of that... but I don't know how to rate this book. The parts with the magic and Jared in general was phenomenal... the rest not so much.
The beginning was really good and intriguing, but then it drags for more than half of the book. Nothing happens except for Jared partying, blacking out, fighting with his mum and hooking up/arguing with Sarah. There is so much drinking and drugs, and eventually it just becomes ridiculous, but I liked.
I really like Jared as a character though. He's very interesting and genuinly likeable. My heart really went out to him, especially in the last part of the book. On the other hand his mum felt like a caricature. I liked Sarah somewhat in the beginning but then she turned it to the most tiring manic pixie dream girl. It was slightly subverted in the end, but I still think she fell into the stereotype too much.
One major thing that had me taking stars off was the outdated and unrealistic way Robinson wrote the dialogue. It wasn't even slightly belivable that teenagers speak like that.
That being said I just have to say (again) how much I loved Jared. He was an amazingly well-crafted character. He's definitely among in the top five of my favourite main characters list. The magic and lore was really interesting and once that kicked in the book became a page turner. The positive things outweighed the negative things and I'll definitely be reading the sequel.
