The amount of information in this book is impressive. It’s laid out like a text book, meant for a beginner. Interior design does not come easy to me and this spelled out some things that I’d never have considered and also explained the reasoning behind why I already do certain things (I’d unknowingly already arranged my bookshelf in a triangle pattern. The book explains why this is a natural inclination). Ultimately I had a few a-ha moments while reading it and took away a few tips that I’m willing to give a shot. I also recognized errors I’ve made in previous homes (I even regularly joke about the layout of a “bowling alley” house we had a few years back, and now it’s been explained to me why it always felt like a bowling alley!) and I’m just walking away feeling a little more prepared to furnish our next home.

For a book on interior design, I wish there had been a few more examples of color in the color chapter. But I really enjoyed this book. Easy to read and understand. Loved the side by side comparisons on depth, etc.

Such a great and practical book! For us it will be a staple in the next few years while we are moving and furnishing our new home. Can’t wait to apply the principles and tips Frida details in this book.

Outstanding, applicable advice for making a home nicer to live in. A bit of “blue-sky” thinking in some chapters and perhaps unrealistic expectations for how much time one has to spend on caring for their home, but excellent principles that you can pick and choose from to assist in improving your living space.

Basically a textbook on interior design for the absolute beginner. It delivers clear guidance on a lot of the questions that friends and I had on furnishing our first post b-school apartments. Things like, how big should the rug be relative to the table? To the room? How many inches of space should there be between the dining room table and the wall for people to move around? Etc. I remember googling those types of things a lot and it would have been nice to have them in a book.

My copy is now full of flags and post-its; I’m excited to revisit when we move into the new place.

The lack of photographs in this book seems to really bother some people. It contains no photos, just simple line drawing exhibits when needed. I’m fine with this - I think it makes the book more accessible and it reminds me of Mark Bittman’s “how to cook everything” which also has no photos. I do wish there were more exhibits, though! Some principles just make more sense illustrated.
