Welp— this is awkward.
I can’t believe this series fell so flat in the end. I’d been really enjoying the first book and the second hit a bit of a slump but was still pretty entertaining. This one? I’ve had so many moments where I found issues in how things could possibly unfold with the very small planning the characters seem to do.
Then the characters themselves were starting to really bug me. Arrah is just making “plans” with no thoughts of how they’ll happen. Then she and Rudjek are trying to be a couple but actively working against each other at the same time? Which was very irritating since they’re best friends and clearly on the same side? So why are they not communicating with each other better? Efiya strangely feels like a child (which she is in terms of age) but is also conniving like an evil genius and throws around the idea of seducing Daho (so uncomfortable with that). Daho also feels like a moody teenager rather than an ancient being fighting against the beings who took his family, which made it difficult to take him seriously.
I just lost steam with this, unfortunately, so DNF at 33%.
