Wow!!! Completely and utterly blown away by this beautiful, intelligent, revolutionary book!! My knowledge of DC fandom is minimal, but Jemisin and Campbell created this world so excellently that there is little need for background knowledge. I’m sure those who are well versed in Green Lantern lore benefitted from it, but as someone newer to DC I didn’t feel locked out. Jemisin tackles fascism, humanity, empires, and justice in such a succinct and interesting way. I need moreeeee! Excellent quotes from Black creatives and revolutionaries are added to each chapter, and there are visually stunning recaps with re-imagined pop culture moments that just add a cherry on top of the whole experience. Thank you for this boook! I wish I had more words to explain how great this was, but I’ll leave you with “READ THIS RIGHT NOW!!!!!!”

CW: police brutality, murder, slavery, racism.

Don't be put off by the fact that this is technically a Green Lantern comic! It's a stand-alone story featuring a new character and a new setting. My GL knowledge is limited to what I picked up back in the 90s in a comics chat on IRC, and I was able to jump right in without any trouble.

Far Sector is a murder mystery set in an alien civilization, with just a dash of super heroics to keep it exciting. Lantern Sojourner Mullein is tasked with solving a society's first murder in 500 years. Along the way she has to deal with politics, police, oh yeah, and the fact that everyone in this society has their emotions suppressed from birth. The story takes some twist and turns and Lantern Mullein (Jo to her friends) picks up allies and enemies along the way.

I'd say my only complaint is that I felt the story wrapped up very quickly -- probably due to the nature of having been published across 12 issues of a comic. I think it would have benefitted from a double-sized final issue so the resolution wouldn't feel so rushed.

This feels a little more "mature" than the super hero comics I read as a teen -- probably more of a PG-13 than a PG rating? There's violence, implied nudity and sexual situations, and plenty of cursing, plus some heavy subject matter with regards to policing and politics. It's not quite as graphic as Saga, more in line with Monstress, but less gory. Should be appropriate for emotionally mature teen readers but I'd hesitate to give it to a middle grade reader.

Most of all, I was in love with the art for this book. Stunning colours, creative use of the Green Lantern constructs and one of my favourite spins on the GL uniform — Jo looks amazing in every panel. The characters were fun to read and most of them had just the right amount of sass to them. The world building and set work really well for this story, though at times the political intrigues connected to a murder-mystery went a little over my head.
