The plot was decent, but the ending did just that...ended. Nothing spectacular at all.
This book took me back to my single days in Larchmont Village and Los Angeles in general. Quick and happy read.
How would I describe the new novel, THE BOOKISH LIFE OF NINA HILL by Abbi Waxman? Easy. It’s the perfect summer read.
Nina Hill is the best kind of book nerd, happy with her small life that includes working at her local bookstore, a giant planner, and a cat named Phil. Books are her best friends. She doesn’t need anyone else in her life and she’s perfectly fine with that arrangement. But after receiving news that she might have a family that she didn’t know existed her semi-isolated life starts to become more and more crowded. Plus, several run-ins with a hunky guy that smells of sawdust and plays for a competing trivia team leaves Nina feeling that she might need more than books in her life after all.
Hitting the bookshelves on July 9th, this perfect summer romantic comedy is set in Los Angeles and is filled humor and romance and the kind of drama that keeps things interesting without making you break out in a sweat. Abbi Waxman is funny and her writing has a wit that you can’t help but love. Her characters aren’t just interesting but are also smart and clever and quick-witted. Even characters that you think are terrible you can’t help but loving in the end.
If you read her two previous novels, THE GARDEN OF SMALL BEGINNINGS and OTHER PEOPLE’S HOUSES, then you’re in for an extra special treat since favorite characters from both of these novels reappear in BOOKISH. If for some crazy reason you haven’t read her previous novels, stop what you’re doing and get your butt down to your local library and pick them up. You won’t be disappointed.
You don’t have to be a book nerd to love THE BOOKISH LIFE OF NINA HILL. Yes, there are plenty of book references for all of us that are book lovers, but this fun, quick read is for anyone and everyone. Put your fuzzy socks on, grab a cup of tea and your cat (or small dog), and get cozy in your favorite reading chair with this great new book!

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this book for an honest review. I actually requested the book because of the title and cover
This book started a bit slow for me. The first 30% or so took me 3 days which is unusual for me. The last 70% took me less than a day.
Oh Nina how I could relate to you. She loved books and loved being alone. But Nina comes to realize that being alone isn’t the only way to love. She discovers that we all need others and our alone time in smaller doses.
Several quotes from the book that made me want to shout out "That is me!":
" She refueled during the day by grabbing moments of solitude and sometimes felt like her life was a long-distance swim between islands of solitude."
".... and bought a new planner in the middle of the year and started over, so what?"
"Oh my God, she thought, it's hard to be human sometimes, with the pressure to be civilized lying only very thinly over the brain of a nervous little mammal."
Any reader and lover of books will love all the references to other books. I repeatedly giggled with different thoughts Nina had and felt like I could totally related to her.
This book will definitely be on my favorites list of the year.

Fully went in expecting to hate Nina, per the many reviews that stated I would hate Nina. But no -- I found her to be funny, delightful, and completely relatable. What that says about me? I don't know. But this was a thoroughly enjoyable read (or, listen, if you do it audiobook style like me) and I was disappointed when it ended.

I was looking for a fun read after finishing Onyx Storm (T_T) and this was that! I really liked the book's ability to be silly and good at the same time haha, but the romance left me wanting.
*Spoiler?*
None of the characters were really fleshed out, but the main love interest was vying for Nina, trying for a date over and over and over again, then they have each other, great, super cute, then she has anxiety and a panic attack and wants to be alone and he decides that's it then? Everyone (in the book) kept calling it a breakup and I didn't get that vibe at all?? As someone with anxiety, I didn't love that quick cut off where he then ignored her anytime she attempted to reach out because it didn't match his character at all. Then they get back together like it wasn't a big deal after all? Then why did you ignore her so viscerally !!!!!
anyway.... my own personal qualm with the book. Truly loved it until that happened and that was about 75-80% in, and obviously knew the ending was going to be a quick wrap up in that case, so then I wasn't interested at all which was a BUMMER.
Still liked the book, would still recommend.
-- borrowed from the library and had planned to buy my own copy I liked it so much until the problem had to happen for no real reason, so I'm glad it's a borrow!
gosh this sounds so negative but I truly felt like that ruined the book ! like!! you had been doing so well!! why did you have to do that!
this is why I don't skew towards romance if I can help it (aside from Emily Henry, absolute bangers that one) but this wasn't supposed to be romance focused (and it WASN'T, so why did it have to have the cliche romance turbulence and resolution!!!!) so whatever

Charming, quirky, and utterly adorable, this book is an enjoyable read. Like many introverts, Nina thinks she’s her best self when she’s alone. However, she comes to realize that the connections we make with others create the spaces we need to grow. There’s romance and trivia contests, laugh out loud moments and plenty of book references, I recommend this one for when you need to read something uplifting.
Relatable
Nina is everything I wanted in a character and reminds me so much of myself. I thoroughly loved the book.
