Deserves 5 Stars for being a comfort story/ fandom of mine but objectively speaking you have to admit that it’s not a very well written book or overall that great.
I also highly advise people to check the trigger warnings before reading this one because there is some heavy stuff in there. If you’re here for a quick read and don’t mind the mentioned triggers I do think you could give it a go but I don’t think I would ever really recommend this book to someone even though I like it.

Neil Josten has been running from his father and his haunted past for most of his life, until he’s given an opportunity to play the sport he loves for Palmetto State University. Only thing is, this will put him in the spotlight where it’s easier for his father to find him, and it requires him to play with a group of delinquents - one of which he remembers from his past.

Overall the book was very well written, save from the occasional line that brought me secondhand embarrassment, but nowhere near enough to deter me from wanting to finish it. I found it a very easy and quick read, and just really enjoyed it!

The book is largely based around a made-up sport called Exy, and therefore involves a lot of descriptions regarding it. However, even being someone who tends to stay away from sports at all costs, it didn’t bother me in the slightest.

The interactions in this book, and I’m not exaggerating, gave me life. A couple of emotionally damaged teenagers that are forced to get along? Please and thank you. The power dynamics in the group are just so well written and intriguing, and although they’re not very detailed in the beginning, I was still living for every shred that did shine through.

please don't read this series if you're not already extremely fucked up and have nothing to lose. the writing is terrible, it doesn't make sense, there are extremely harmful stereotypes and painfully outdated language, and the whole series is just one huge trigger warning. if you love bullshit for the sake of shock value, maybe give it a try. this series has taken over my life and i wouldn't have it any other way. but that does NOT mean i'd recommend it to anyone, necessarily. just...be careful. go read the raven cycle or six of crows instead.

I didn’t know what to expect out of this book, but I definitely didn’t think I’d be as obsessed with it as I was. It’s one of those books I just *had* to keep reading.

It’s much darker than I anticipated. Not gruesome, just dark. There’s a lot of abuse – on and off page – but it didn’t feel as bad as other, less dark books I tried to read.

I don’t think I’d like to see Exy as a sport (I hate the NHL because I find it too violent), but on the context of the book it’s quite interesting.

I’m looking forward to book 2, and trying to figure out how that ship everyone talks about will get to happen (if it’s even canon, cause right now it makes no sense to me that those two could have a romantic relationship).

A friend censored the particularly violent parts for me, which I appreciate greatly. The sports part made me think of Haikyuu and I’m sure I’ll be just as obsessed with this series as that!
