this was pretty different from what i typically read, and i liked it, but i think it just wasn’t for me. it did a really good job of portraying an emotionally abusive and controlling relationship, though. you can see that sam is abusive but you can also see why julia doesn’t see it that way at first, and how she tries to justify sam’s actions. it’s so easy to say you’d just leave the relationship, until you’re actually living it. any time sam said anything i just wanted to reach through the book and scream at her. i’m so glad julia got a happy ending.

Really funny bits especially the therapy sessions and the scene in the rave toilet. Annoying protagonist. Grim descent into controlling relationship. Enjoyed the audible actor’s voices she was v good at accents

3.5/5: A nuanced queer romance that lures you in with rom-com tropes and turns out to really be about control and consent. So refreshing to read a warm, funny, compelling novel about complex queer relationships that manages to balance light and dark so deftly.

Julia has had enough.

The only thing she hasn’t had enough of is orgasms; she hasn’t had proper sex in three years.

So, when Julia gets invited to a warehouse party in a part of town where trendy people who have lots of sex go on a Friday night, she readily accepts. And that night she meets someone: a figurative artist, who also happens to be a woman.

She finds her tribe at queer swing dancing classes, and guided by her new lover Sam, she soon discovers London’s gay bars and BDSM clubs . . . and the complexities of polyamory.

Soon it becomes clear that Sam needs to call the shots, and Julia’s newfound liberation comes to bear a suspicious resemblance to entrapment . . .

Thank you Goodreads and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for a chance to read this book!!

This is the first LGBT book I have read. That I can remember at least. The beginning of the book was good funny and easy to get into. The middle was iffy and the ending was surprising. To me the book came off as a coming-of-age book. I think that is mostly because Julia is just starting to find out who she is. But it was an ok book. Happy reading everyone!!

Lulled in the middle when nothing was really going on. Trigger for emotionally abusive relationships. Was spicy those in terms of romance/sex.

Aside from the bad trope "I live an alternative lifestyle so I must be toxic and abusive" and how many shots I should have taken everytime she said "LESBIAN SEX"...it was a good read!

I really enjoyed this, it was darkly funny and the characters were really entertaining. This definitely isn't for those that are easily offended, the sex scenes were extremely graphic.
An interesting look at the dynamics of relationships, both personal, familial and workplace.
