I really liked this! It had kind of a slow start, but overall it was very enjoyable. The romance was especially good. It was a slow simmer that bubbled up perfectly in the end.
It definitely felt like a standalone, so I'm interested in seeing what the second book is about!

So freaking BORING. I’m so tired of these books that try so hard to be Throne of Glass and fail miserably at it.

To my eyes, it should deserve a hype with everyone reading it!
Rating: 3.5/5 stars
The Queen Rising was a really fun and vivid read. Fun in that it was not heavy with intrigue and political manipulations and vivid in that I really, really loved the writing. It was flowery without being too flowery and succeeded in making you envision the scenes without a lot of info dumping and unnecessary descriptions. I can't lie; the writing is what I loved the most about this book, and if ever Ross decides to publish another book in a different genre, I am sure as hell going to buy it.
Now about the actual book. There were a couple of plot twists in this novel that would have been more surprising to the reader if it was not for the pages and pages of family trees in the beginning. If I had not made the mistake of constantly referring to said family tree, some events would have been more surprising to me. So if you plan to read this book, please do not think of reading or referring to the family trees in the beginning. That would ruin some plot twists, and that would suck.
The plot in itself was pretty interesting. I actually really liked that while Brienna was the main character, she was not the fated "chosen one" of the story, but rather she was here to help said chosen one. That was refreshing, and if I am honest, pretty cool as well. But I have to say that the world in itself was much more interesting than anything else. Ross did a pretty god job at creating and describing the world she created, which was amazingly vivid while I read about it.
The characters were okay, but besides Brienna, we don't know a lot about the other characters. Character relationships are important too! Don't gloss over them for the sake of your plot
I know that the sequel is coming out next year (the cover was revealed yesterday!) and I am interested to read it, but in my opinion the book ended pretty well. The way I read it, it can be read as a standalone because the ending was pretty satisfactory and there were not really any loose ends. I mean, I still am curious after what Brienna said at the end of the last chapter and I would like to see it happening, but it's something that would take quite some time to happen so....
Nonetheless, for me this book is a solid 3.5 stars. It did not pull me enough in the story to give it one more star, but it was good enough to give it more than 3 stars.

Spoiler
For example, she stays with Jourdain for months but we rarely see any of their interactions, and we are led to believe by the end that they are close enough that she wears his name? When did that happen? I understand that if explored further, it would have taken a good chunk of the book but I would have liked to at least see more of their interactions together and their family dynamics.I know that the sequel is coming out next year (the cover was revealed yesterday!) and I am interested to read it, but in my opinion the book ended pretty well. I really enjoy Rebecca Ross’s other books, so I wanted to give her debut a try. It was enjoyable, but she definitely has improved a lot since publishing this.
Also, the love interest being almost a decade older than Brienna… was honestly pretty uncomfortable to read. To each their own, I suppose.
