If I Ran the Circus by Dr. Seuss

An imaginative young boy (not unlike the one that saw the parade on Mulberry Street) describes the circus he will have once he cleans the lot behind Mr. Sneelock's grocery store. That kind gentleman will do everything from selling balloons to training exotic Seussian animals to being shot out of a cannon, and he will remain unruffled as he performs all these tasks.

Delightful illustrations and a couple of special Seuss words in the rhymes.

Poor Sneelock...

Morris McGurk has a wild imagination. One that takes him to the idea that Mr. Sneelock wouldn't mind if Morris were to run a circus in the lot behind his store. To Morris, Sneelock wouldn't mind being a part of the circus either. They're friends after all!

Selling pink lemonade at the lemonade stand? Yeah, Sneelock wouldn't mind! 500 gallons of it, that is. Oh, and Sneelock could collect the hot pebbles that fall off the moon that the Foon likes to eat! He wouldn't mind that! Being passed back and forth by the spouts of two whales? Pfft, he wouldn't mind!

There's a reason why the term "Seussian" was coined. This book is very much that. A big, healthy spoonful. I wish I could appreciate it more, but I've outgrown that part of me, sadly.

I'm not a fan of circuses, but I did enjoy the imagined antics of stalwart Mr Sneelock and his trusty smoking pipe.

Keep your eye out for a winkhood. Ignore the busy pages with every last stampeding bamfloozler. Be patient for the jot, who juggles some things you might think he could not. Ecce Sneelock!

A very layered story, in true Seussian style. Rhymes throughout build-up the excellence of this circus and all the acts found therein. From balancing species to those who leap through the air, Dr. Seuss knows how to captivate the reader. Even though the story was longer and more detailed than he is used to reading, Neo was enthralled with all the varied bits. He did not recognise many of the acts from our recent trip to the circus, but he loved the idea of seeing them in the future.

Not one of his best books and nowhere near as good as if I ran the Zoo. The rhyming felt muddled and I found myself falling over some of the lines as they just weren't as smooth as usual. The feeling of the circus was there, all those bright colours and amazing stuff going on and the "Roll up! Roll up!" style calls in the rhymes.

Did feel a bit sorry for poor Mr Sneelock at times though, poor overworked fella.
