Planet Adyn

The plot was interesting mostly because not much was revealed. It's one of the things that frustrated me in this book: the author created mystery by withholding information when there was no reason to do so.
The children not knowing about the enemy, his powers or the reason why he's hunting them makes no sense. It makes it easier for the enemy to kill them. Considering how Robin left them his files to defend themselves, it only proves my point. Especially since Robin knew he was going to die, which made me sad btw.

M.L. Wang also used the "questions/answers" mecanism in the dialogues to implement her plot and her world-building, which is the most annoying way to deliver knowledge. I wish the characters made their own discoveries, did some research, faced some surprises... Anything that would have made all this more entertaining than this academic approach.

The author focused heavily on the characters - which I usually like - but there wasn't much development. I liked them but their lives became repetitive after some time.

I still enjoyed it. I liked the magic, the themes and the mystery around other magical beings.

I'm not sure if I'll ever read the sequel as the conclusion to the series is not garanteed. I will definitely read her next projects though.

I'm choosing not to leave a star review but I didn't finish this one. After months of trying I just couldn't. So eye rolly. And the writing reads like an amateur writer. The Sword of Kaigan was so much better.

Life is hard enough being a teenager and having to get through school during those years, now add secrets that you have never told anyone, not even your parents. You also think you are the only one in the world who harnesses this secret. Joan has never felt more alone in the world, until she meets Daniel and discovers there is someone like her out there. She can finally share and show her secret. But there are still many unanswered questions about why she possesses what she does and how and where she now belongs. In this world or another? Great, fast paced read. What if there really is a parallel world out there? The first book did leave off at a cliff hanger, I am interested in reading the second one. I received a free copy of this book from the author/publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Debut YA fantasy novel about a young girl named Joan who has superpowers that seem to have come from nowhere (no one in her family and no one else around her has powers). The brunt of the book is spent from the POV of elementary age to middle school-aged Joan and her struggle with keeping her powers hidden from everyone, including her parents. That kind of loneliness was a little heartbreaking to read. Joan’s world gets rocked when she finds out the new kid in school (and his father) also have powers. I read The Sword of Kaigen before this one and probably should have read in order. No where near the greatness that is the Sword of Kaigen, Planet Adyn did drag a little despite being a short book, but the writing is not horrible, the mystery surrounding the origin of Joan’s powers was intriguing, and the parallel world aspect was interesting. And that ending! Even though this series won’t be finished, I’m still going to read Book 2.

This book got me out of my reading slump! I'm so glad Merphy Napier recommended this on her channel. It was a very compelling read!! Need to read the next book ASAP. I NEED ANSWERS!!

i was actually rather surprised when i found myself liking this book.

the setting for this book was earth, and that is the main reason i was hesitant to trust it. would m. l. wang be able to pull off a very modern, very contemporary setting while simultaneously managing to write about theonites? in addition, would i like a story about the thundyils when i was so used to reading about mamoru and misaki? i needn't have worried: the book did not disappoint.

except with one thing, though: its length. ordinarily, 250+ pages is a very good length, but wang's detailed, discursive writing style, coupled with the fact that the books in the series flanking this one were much longer, made this book feel like an introductory book to the next one, a book written only to be able to connect the sword of kaigen with theonite: orbit. if there was more plot in this book rather than being saved for the one that came after it, i think i would have enjoyed it much more.

The beginning was a bit slow and confusing to me so I put this phenomenal book down for a bit. But on a long train ride I took it with me again to give it a second chance. And I am so happy I did that!
It is well worth the read and even if you find the beginning difficult I recommend you hold out a little longer and be rewarded for it!
The characters are so likable and interesting and
the death of Daniel's father had me in tears
.
Also the world building is just fantastic! So much love put into it and so detailed!

If you like superheroes and/or fantasy and/or sci-fi and/or detailed world building you should most definetely read this!

There was a lot of really interesting things happening in this, and I'm curious about the sequel. However the sequel is more than double the length, so it'll probably be a while before I can get to it.

The writing itself is decent, but there's definitely some issues. This is a self-published work, so that's not surprising. There was so much exposition, especially in the beginning. Just giant info dumps, large sections dedicated to explaining the linguistics of an invented language, and just a lot of unnecessary information. This could have been steam-lined into something really amazing (one of the reasons I'm so nervous about the sequel and the sheer length of it).
