What a beautiful meditation on grief, pain, relationships, and humanity. The protagonist is a trans woman which brings up some interesting ideas/questions surrounding the scifi elements.
This is a very allegorical story, so I would really only recommend reading it if you're interested in that sort of experience as opposed to a more action-y or cerebral scifi.

I absolutely loved the book, it has some flaws, like not having enough pages, where I wished it would have been longer. Because I think the world could have been explored so much more! But all in all I just fell completely into the book and it was great reading it...

A world set in a supposed Utopia where people are still miserable. This ends up an exploration on it being OK to feel negative emotions and how they are a net-positive aspect of life.

I assumed this would be like an adventure story where the worn-out protag and the green compound-kid end up exploring the system of the Compound. But actually it's more of a literary novel strictly about the protag dealing with loss and grief. The compound-kid is more a plot driver than a person. We never explore a Compound, rather it's entirely the relationship with the Seep aliens that's central to the story.

A quick, immersive read for the Shirley Jackson fan who will go for some Ted Chiang if their enby beloved reads it aloud to them. RIYL Karen Russell, Carmen Maria Machado, and especially Helen Phillips.

I’m so happy I came across this!!! It’s just so perfect. Short (I wish I could continue reading it forever) but perfectly paced and introspective. Also just super fun and interesting 10/10 would recommend

This is my favorite book of the year so far. it is a character-driven scifi about grief, humanity and much more. I adore the writing style and the story as a whole.
