Engaging, informative, and brutally/compassionately honest and self-aware. Melissa Febos continues to be one of my favorite memoirists, mixing fascinating research with incisive personal, social, and spiritual insights that are both specific and universal.

Well. Damn. This is a very thoughtful book that could  be paired with Cult Classic by Sloane Crosely and In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. Why do we partner? Are we being good intentional partners? There is also a lot of her experience with addiction which is very informative and I love all the cultural influences and historical references in the text. I learned a lot. And I would read this book again. Maybe once a year.

I enjoyed certain aspects of this memoir. I couldn't personally relate to everything, so at times I felt a bit removed from the content. But ultimately I think that this was an important and useful read about relationships (or the lack of) and their complexities.

As someone with very different relationship experiences than Febos, I found it interesting to view her own life and navigation through them, as one that is different from my lived experience. I also quite enjoyed Febos's reflective and beautiful prose.
