The overuse of beautiful prose becomes laborious and slow. There were interesting ideas explored but it was not always clear what the author was trying to comment on; a lot of the book appears contradictory. It was very vivid and evocative at its best, but quite often came across as pretentious and unfocused, especially in the middle of the book.

This book definitely has problematic elements. I mean I know its from the POV of young men but the description of the young women etc you can very much tell is written by a man who doesn't know women 😭 That being said I couldn't put the book down tbh! It was interesting to realise that you never truly know the Lisbon girls' POV, you never truly know who they are apart from what has been observed. Its a very tragic story.

The first two thirds of the book is so strange, weird and uncomfortable. But the last third is so beautifully written that I’m sure the different voices of the narrators are like that on purpose.

it was disorienting,
having flashbacks to when the narrator(s?) were in school to then mentioning them when they are old and grown was out of the blue, and also the use of exhibit # and there not being anything to refer to felt like i was reading detective notes but not having all the pieces and we never really get told very clearly how the girls off themselves only the first one
