The writing is beautiful, but it suffers from the lack of the girls' perspectives. I know, I know, that was the point, that the boys were just outsiders looking in. While that's interesting, I miss the inner dialogue of the girls. I feel like the writing style combined with their perspectives could've been something beautiful.

This one was an interesting one for sure. A good thing I liked was how atmospheric it was, and how vivid the descriptions of the Lisbon’s house were. But, this book also showed its age with how problematic some of it was. It definitely romanticizes suicide a lot, without a real understanding of the mental illness that causes it. I also would have vastly preferred that it be from the point of view of the sisters, instead of a bunch of pervy men.
Read from the Provo library.

The overuse of beautiful prose becomes laborious and slow. There were interesting ideas explored but it was not always clear what the author was trying to comment on; a lot of the book appears contradictory. It was very vivid and evocative at its best, but quite often came across as pretentious and unfocused, especially in the middle of the book.
