This was a really interesting book. The prose mirrors the style of 'on earth we are briefly gorgeous' in being poeticly written. Unfortunately, it is a victim of its time with several outdated stereotypes, however I still enjoyed it overall

I found myself frustrated witht the boys narration as they are unable to see the clear signs of the girls struggle. beautifully written, though provoking and layered

“obviously doctor… you’ve never been a thirteen year old girl” goes so hard especially considering it was written by a man

what this book does well, it does so well — the hazy, melancholic atmosphere; the bleak realism; the writing was brilliant overall, but did i love everything i read? no, the (extremely) unreliable collective narrative was almost too jarring and disconcerting at times

i absolutely ate this book up. the book is told through the perspective of the boys who become infatuated with the lisbon girls, which makes it an interesting study of the male gaze. because of the way the book is told, we don’t get to know anything about the suicides or the girls interior lives, which made you really distanced from all of the characters, but i think that that was intentional. overall an interesting book.
