Perhaps Disney has tainted my view of The Jungle Book. I grew up with many of these stories (or a spin on them) and what I found in Kipling's book as an adult was just haphazard and boring. The ideas and themes were so disconnected from one to another, and I found it difficult to pay attention - especially with the old English speak. I love the characters, though, and the actual plots were good. Storytelling was a miss, however, an extra .5 star just because I do love the Rikki-Tikki-Tavi story.

“Are you fond of Kipling?” queried a literary friend of ours of a sweet young thing he met at a party last week.
“I really don’t know,” blushed the s. y. t., “I never kippled.”—Book Notes.

Now that I've kippled, I would say I like it fine.
adventurous

kipling is an a**hole but the stories are cool and heartfelt is you don’t look at the rampant imperialism.

This one was a little disappointing after Just So Stories, being rather disparate in theme and setting as well as of varying quality. The "Mowgli" stories are by far the best of the bunch, with Riki-tiki-tavi & the White Seal also joining their ranks. The others are merely ok. The underlying colonialism is also much more obvious, and in some cases rather jarring. Still, these were a very satisfying read and a good transition back into fiction after spending a goodly amount of time reading non-fiction.

I love Kipling's work, generally speaking, and this was quite delightful.
