Nothing like the Disney movie version, which I am glad. I liked how there were other stories in the books along with Mowgli's story. It was very nicely written for being written in the 1890s. And the random stories that were thrown into the book were very entertaining and I enjoyed reading the Ricki-ticki-tavi story.

Me gustaron más unas historias que otras pero si es un muy buen libro para niños!
This book was not what I expected, since I was previously only familiar with the Disney version. It was really a series of short stories, some about Mowgli, but also about other animals - some not even in the jungle! Almost all of the short stories were great, but of course my favorites were the Mowgli stories.
Reading about Mowgli, Baloo and Bagheera is just as fun as watching them. Yes, even with the added discomfort of the beatings. (It's a bear, what can you do)
adventurous
I liked this but it was a little confusing at times.
This book is just great fun. The stories are short and clear, with Mowgli as a reoccuring storyline. You can see how both Disney movies were inspired by this/these book(s).
I regret not reading it sooner, because the thing that held me back most was the general opinion of my surroundings: the book was supposed to be much darker then the movie. It certainly isnt a cheery fun and dance book, but I believed that darker would be an awful miserable unfulfilling life for Mowgli. The main part that was less pleasent is that in the Jungle, animals get killed by man or beast. All in all, it was a good fun read.

This was a bookclub pick because we have recently read a couple of books that referenced the Jungle Book (The Tiger by John Vaillant and the Tiger's Wife by Tea Obreht). I hadn't read this book as a child and to my recollection haven't even watched the whole movie rendition by Disney. So, I was going in thinking the whole book would be about Mowgli etc. To my surprise this story was a few chapters, but the Jungle book was actually a compilation of short stories about different animals you might find in India from Mowgli's story to a mongoose, elephants and the various animals involved in war. I am not usually a huge fan of short stories... I tend to prefer something longer I can sink my teeth into, but these were pretty good, and to my surprise did not shield you from the harsh reality of a natural life - kill or be killed.
