I love that Robert didn't have an unnecessary love connection in this one.

Brown's novels are fascinating for the way they bring cities to life, not just the way that his well-crafted thrillers keep my attention. In this novel, Washington DC's features come to the fore. The Capitol, the Library of Congress, and a number of other local features related to the Masons are key players in the plot (and just about as well characterized).
Oh yeah, there is a thriller going on here, and the "mystery" is an obsessed, tattooed man willing to destroy the nation's leaders to gain mystical powers. Compared with Angels & Demons (the papacy) and Da Vinci Code (Opus Dei), Lost Symbol is on shakier ground because the powers under advisement are almost completely supernatural, which means that Brown's realism is sure to disappoint in the end.
What I'll remember about The Lost Symbol will be the landmarks of D.C., in particular the last scene: the sun rising over the top of the Washington Monument. What I'll soon forget will be the various masonic conspiracies that ultimately reveal nothing.

Very well written! I love Dan Brown...part conspiracy theory and intrigue and part historical fiction.
This is such a page turner... well, at least for the first 3/4 is was.
The book keeps to Dan Browns well proven formula of mysterious puzzles, conspiracy theories and finding a long lost secret that promises to make life so much better, damn!
And again this formula worked, just that it could have been a little shorter. The formula is well known, so it is hard to surprise the reader and the bad guy is just so typical that I didn't care for following along in his storyline too much and also the grand finale was a bit too much prolonged, come on we can all guess how it will end.

Helps understanding that we have roots and they mean something

While this was a good read, I found some of the aspects of the "mystery" to be predictable and I guessed them very early on. I still wanted to read on but it made the book a little less exciting. Overall, a good read, like all of the books in the Robert Langdon series.
