The Lost Symbol

Dan Brown

3.48 AVERAGE

Mixing the enigmatic with the ordinary brings a lot of attention. It can be sustained till it is veiled. Everyone likes a mystery. With that liking, it is natural that people are drawn to the depiction of something mysterious and its unveiling. If this mysterious element offers supernatural powers, then the interest increases multi-fold. The biggest problem is that inherently, there is nothing under the veil, or whatever there is, is not as enchanting as it is made out to be. So it all implodes at the end and we feel somewhat deceived.

I like separate worlds. Like Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, or Lord of the Rings. In these worlds, the author has a liberty to innovatively create something which need not to be real. In the works in which story is set in realms of the reality, that is very hard and so inadvertently there is certain disappointment towards the end. The lost symbol falls in the same bucket.

I have read both the Robert Langdon books which came before this. 'Angels and Demons' is my favourite one among his works. By the third book, the pattern has emerged and the charm is slowly diffusing. There are many aspects which I am not convinced with either. For that, I have to add spoilers, so I'd skip that.

Out of the things that I like in his works, research is most definitely the top one. He put a lot of resources to lay a solid foundation. Usually, the theme he picks is really interesting and has some mysterious elements which are open to interpretation or thought. He would be a great a conspiracy theorist himself. Another asset is mixing fact with fiction damn well. He puts a lot of reasoning behind his fiction, making it logical to follow. I like that.

As a thriller novel, the book makes an impact. However, it lacks in the character building or the drama elements. The last book I read was Anna Karenina, chances are it is influencing my expectations of character building.

Overall, I think I enjoyed certain aspects of the book. While the research and concept were solid, it was handled very casually. I would have rated it less than average, but his research and simple narration gets a bonus half.

I'll admit it...I liked this book. Much more so than DaVinci Code. Perhaps because I was prepared for the writing style before I started reading, so I didn't focus on it as much this time.
