This book was a slower read than I had hoped, but it was a good story. I'd give it 3 1/2 stars if I could do halfsies! I learned a lot about what life might have been like as a Civil War soldier, what life might have been like as a slave during the Civil War, and the many atrocities that occurred during the war.
It's a genius story about the father from Little Women, so it interweaves characters that many of us know and love. It makes me want to re-read Little Women!
It would definitely be a good book club book, as there are lots of issues that spark conversation about the characters and life in various places in the country during the Civil War.

I couldn't finish this book. I don't know why. I loved People of the Book, and I read LIttle Women so many times I wore it out... so I should have loved it. But, I just didn't. Maybe I'll try again another time.
I don't know what my problem is, I'm sure this is a perfectly wonderful story by an author that I like, but something keeps me from picking it up at night to finish it. The premise is interesting enough: the back story of the father of Little Women, fighting in the Civil War...but I'm halfway through and it's just not keeping my attention. Hmm.

Good story, but somewhat predictable in its portrayl of the Civil War.
Finished out of sheer will. I have really enjoyed some of her other novels, but this one treaded on the hollow ground of Little Women, and not lightly. No thank you.
Brooks imagined what the husband/father in Little Women did during the book and wrote March based on that life. She is an AMAZING author. I was continually blown away by her use of the english language to describe scenes and characters.
Beautifully written and honestly told. I loved this book from beginning to end.
