Excellent book! I love that we got to dive into Winters story and get to see an insight to why winter is the way she is. Cold princess as some call her but then she met her cowboy or bull rider I should say! Theo, he truly knew what winter needed and taught her how to truly be loved!

*2023 review that I forgot to add to GR*

This was another amazing addition to Elise Silver's Chestnut Springs series. I loved Winter so much more than I thought I was going to. She was bold but vulnerable, independent but in need of someone. She was someone who was carrying so much baggage from her childhood and didn't have anyone she could rely on. I empathized with her.

Ugh I wish I enjoyed it more than I did considering I love the other books but this falls at a flat 3/5 for me. I really thought I’d love it after seeing tik tok clips but I just feel like the emotional depth was missing. Like I wish there were way more bonding and navigating moments between Theo and Vivi, and I feel like Theo just claimed he was in love with her but they never actually had deep talks. Don’t get me wrong his actions were sweet but I didn’t get the soulmate vibe, even if he did “wait til they were ready”. Idk something just feels off and kinda some plot holes. Like she just never spoke to the mom again and she was okay with it, and then Gheo was home cuz he was injured and had a collarbone injury nonetheless but was completely active and capable and didn’t have any problem going back on a bull. I also feel like Winter was so close to Sloane in the beginning, and then we just never heard of her again until they were like big parties and she was just in the background. I also think the ending was so rushed where she’s already pregnant again even though they barely were able to navigate their problems in the first place. I loved Theo as a character so maybe it was winter I had a problem with, but I didn’t necessarily hate her either just wasn’t working for me and got really hard to finish. I honestly probably wouldn’t re-read this one which is sad but I hope Beau’s book is good.

Spoiler summary:
Winter is Summer‘s half sister, who is trying to redeem herself and be in Summers life after being a bitch growing up. She goes to visit the small town and runs into Theo, Rhett’s bullfighting protegé. At this time winter is going through a separation since her creepy husband, low-key groomed summer in the hospital. Theo is immediately captivated by her after she bitches him out for driving crazy and then they go to a bar together. They get drunk and write a sex deal on the coaster and have a great night of sex. Fast forward she’s pregnant and she text him and he says thanks for letting me know and just seems like he doesn’t want to be in the babies life. Nine months later when she goes back, she’s all mean to him and he’s confused as to why. Turns out his publicist had his phone and never told Theo about the message so he missed the first nine months of his daughters life. He was really beat up about this, and she felt horrible too since she was being mean thinking he just chose not to be in their life. Then he immediately starts taking the role of father and is just around them all the time and his mom comes to visit and that was sweet. But overall I feel like the rest just felt really rushed and messy and insta-lovey. I wish I felt more of a genuine connection between the two. There is some ex-husband drama where he tries to get a paternity test and Theo says a rude comment saying am I the father? But then they make up blah blah blah

Specific moments I liked:

After first meeting:

“Dude. I think I’m in love with your sister-in-law. She’s so fiery.”

“Red or white? You said you needed a drink. I wasn’t sure which one you like better, so I poured both. I’ll drink whatever you don’t.”

“Careful, that one’s got claws,” Cade offers right as Willa shoves a pointy elbow into his ribs.
I grin. “That’s okay. I like having my back scratched.”

“If I had known, I’d have been here every step of the way. Supporting you in whatever way you needed. And Winter? Now that I’m here? I’m here. Okay? No expectations, but I want you to let me help you. I want to get to know her if that’s okay with you.”

“It’s just an Americano. I didn’t know what you liked besides tequila and doggy style”

“Look how beautiful you are.” The sun lights Theo and Vivienne’s faces in the same warm, golden hue. “You look just like your mom.”

“I could fucking bury whoever made you believe you’re as unlovable as you seem to think.”

“Oh, my bad. I didn’t realize you were with someone.”
His eyes slice over to mine, busting me. Again. “I’m not. Yet.”

“Watch your fucking tone when you’re talking to the mother of my child.”

“Theo is asleep inside the crib. His muscular frame curls around the little girl tucked tightly into the crook of his arm with a peaceful, pleased expression on her face.”

“That’s her first word.” I stare at her in wonder.
“Of course it is. What else would it be? And she’s been saying it all morning.” He turns his gaze back to Vivi. “Haven’t you, baby girl? Been talking about your mama nonstop. And who could blame you? Look at her.”

Booked her a manicure and massage so she can relax

Secretly fixed her broken door hinge and mows her lawn

“Winter: No, you don’t need to do that. Summer booked me a session with another trainer. Max, I think?
Theo: You could have asked me.
Winter: I don’t want to work out with you.
Theo: Is it because you’re going to wear tight pants you know will give me a boner?
Winter: This job must be hard on you with your uncontrollable erections.
Theo: The gym is fine. It’s living next to you that’s the issue.”

Changed the schedule so that he could be her trainer instead of Max

“Because I fucking adore you. Haven’t you been paying attention?”

He kept the coaster contract she made the night they met

“You do know you’re in love with that girl, don’t you?”
“Yeah, Mom. I know.”

“He said, ‘Mom, I met her.’ And I said, ‘Who?’” Loretta’s lips curve up, her eyes taking on a faraway look. “He said, ‘The woman I’m going to marry one day.’”

Gets jealous of Beau dancing with her at the wedding

“Why did you keep that coaster? My phone number?”
“Because I knew I was coming back. You were a mess—respectfully—and I was out of control. We both needed time.”

“I can’t believe I just fucked a bull rider at my sister’s wedding.”
With a smile, I pull my pants up and turn to gather a handful of paper towels to clean her off. “Rude. You fucked your baby daddy at your sister’s wedding, and you know you’d do it again.”

“Now get out of my way, Kip. I want to go home and be with my girls.”

“She’s no one’s leftovers, and I’ve been enjoying her since before you ever saw the divorce papers, buddy.”
