The blurb says it all, but Chapter 7 and 10 delve into the topics deeper; patriarchy and colonialism.

This book took me an oddly long time to read. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy it, or that I wasn’t interested in the characters. I think perhaps I struggled because, like many classics, it follows a story I’ve heard before. Which is no fault of the book and is indeed a mark in its favour — after all, this is considered a classic for a reason.

I found our main cast of characters compelling and lively, and the thematic through-lines of this book (identity within structures of colonialism, racism, and patriarchy) wonderfully well-realised. It’s a phenomenal piece of literature and should probably be read by everyone.

I will be reading the rest of this trilogy, I just might have to give it some space first since I fear this book did put me into a bit of a reading slump.

Quote (in Norwegian)/åpningssetningen: Jeg var ikke lei meg da broren min døde.

i’m a sucker for a coming of age novel, so this was right up my street. it took me until about a third of the way into the book to really get into the way it was written, but from then on i was hooked. i really liked the way it was written, and the characterisation was interesting as well
