I enjoyed this one. It talks about the difficulties that poor African girls face in order to obtain the most basic education. Then it expands on that and cover what happens afterwards.
It talks about how certain types of knowledge are still seen as forbidden or unnecessary for women, after the basics are covered. How it can be hard for a woman to be allowed to apply her own knowledge. And how race can also be an obstacle.
I know there's a continuation, and this book doesn't exactly have an ending, but I still not interested enough to read the second one.

A solid read, but the writing style was very simple and once Tambu got to the mission there was a lot of time skips. I understand it was on purpose, but it was a less enjoyable reading experience as suddenly 50% of the way through the first person narrator becomes more of a passive observer. Nyasha is the metaphorical “protagonist” once she moves to her uncle’s house, and her story is very sad. Her breakdown scene upset me, especially knowing what caused it. The ending is a tad abrupt.
Graphic: Child abuse, Eating disorder, Misogyny, Physical abuse
Moderate: Racism, Colonisation
Minor: Adult/minor relationship, Infidelity, Pregnancy
