I had to read this book for uni, and I'm so happy that I had to.
Its an african "Bildungsroman" about a girl "Tambu" who wants to go to school. Her brother is allowed but for her there was to little money. Her bother dies and she takes his place.
Its about education, post colonialism, Englishness and the place of the african women. How someone goes from "poor" to educated. Family standing and still male domination.
Her uncle sees himself as the provider of all, doesn't believe his daughter, which drives her to an eating disorder, remarries Tambus mother and father because they have sinned. He spents money on all because "it is his duty" and leaves all the work to his wife, till the point where she leaves.
All in all this was soo interesting to read, and I'm very happy that I had the oppertunity to.

This book has so many angles and I don’t have the capacity right now to write about them. So I’ll just say this: the angles are smoothly incorporated. This truly is a coming of age classic and breaks more than one ceiling.

This book is like a coiled snake. For the most part, it starts innocently and quietly -- but it pounces towards at the end with emotions. You shouldn't expect a book titled Nervous Conditions to be without heartache.
A story of a young African girl who will do anything she can to receive her education. Her family experience a tragedy that makes it possible for her to get the education she was dreaming of.
It is a powerful story of a girl wise beyond her years but still so young. I just feel like the book spent so much time developing in the beginning that towards the end it feels rushed and unfinished in a way...
