Marriage. I had nothing against it in principle. In an abstract way I thought it was a good idea. But it was irritating the way it always cropped up in one form or another, stretching its tentacles back to bind me before I had even begun to think about it seriously, threatening to disrupt my life before I could even call it my own.
Nervous Conditions is a brilliant book set in post-colonial Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) primarily addressing patriarchy, colonialism and identity. The themes are well covered in the book however I felt the narration was a bit flat. It wasn't until I got to the last chapters that I finally realized the message the author was trying to put across. The third book looks promising so I will probably continue with the series.

I had such a hard time making any progress on this book that I'm putting it down for now.
Read it for an English class. Wonderful story with lots of depth. It sticks with you once you finish it.

3.75/5 ⭐️ - very powerful and moving book, slow at parts. Also felt that the end was a bit rush with new plot point added in last 15 pages.
So good! Just didn’t finish it before moving onto the next reading in a class last winter sem. Can’t convince myself to pick it up for the last few pgs- but know how it ends from class lol

Very engaging read based on a recommendation - I'll definitely read the sequel. I felt like this was really informative and I learned a lot. I don't know why the pacing was a struggle for me - I just didn't focus super great at points.
