I loved this book! Quick read and great introduction and explanation to what the Danish "Hygge" is. It brings great insight to a part of Danish culture that is so down to earth and explains the relaxed nature of the Danish people.
This was an enjoyable read about a fascinating concept. The design was very hygge, and it was a pleasure to hold and look at. I don't think I have to do much to instill more hygge in my life, but it's nice to have justification for choosing comfort.

Really a very sweet and huggelig book in its own right. Made me feel in the mood for making my home and life a bit cozier, slower, and hyggelig! I liked it a lot. Not that it’s rocket science information, but I’ll take any excuse to buy more candles and blankets.
3.5 Stars!
I think I’ve always been living my best hygge/introvert life without even knowing it...
The Danes are definitely onto something about separating work life and societal pressures from private time at home and indulgence with friends. Hygge is not about shutting out the world and only gratifying one’s selfish desires. It is about creating a way of life that is casual, comfortable, and egalitarian. It is not only okay but also healthy to take care of yourself and your mental well being by creating a relaxing environment as the Danes (and many other nations/peoples) do in their own ways. The author states that "Hygge is possible only if it stands in opposition to something which is not hygge. It is essential for the concept if hygge that it constitutes an alternative to everything that is not hyggeligt in our everyday lives." So yeah, we still have to do all that not so fun adult stuff to enjoy the hyggeligt activities.
Some take aways of how to live your best hygge (hoo-ga) life:
- time with a close knit group of family/friends OR in complete solitude
- a nook of one’s own OR the author’s personal favorite location - a cabin in the woods
- low lighting created by an open fireplace, candles, or lamps
- natural, wooden, & vintage accents
- good books & tea, of course!
- blankets, pillows, & cozy clothes
- baked goods or the art of actually baking (this novel includes fun recipes btw)
- a storm or potentially dangerous element outside
Who knew my home state (Idaho) and Denmark were so similar? I am very lucky to live in the mountains where the above list is often accessible. The slow paced and "enjoy the little things" mind set is essential, in my opinion.

3.5 stars: Well, now all I want to do is bake bread and curl up under a throw blanket with a cup of tea, some Hemingway, and Christmas carols crooning in the background.

The audiobook feels like a textbook and didn't seem very Hygge. Maybe the physical book was cozier and has inspiring pictures?
The text itself seemed very repetitive and just didn't seem to match the vibe of what it was trying to explain.
