A perfect mini coffee table book. This book is aesthetically pleasing and a fun quirky read to pick up, especially in the winter. It is simplistic and repetitive but for a book focusing on hygge and Danish happiness it’s a cute book to keep around.
I laughed a little at the reviews that rated this book poorly because of marketing. Also there are libraries. Also this book will appeal to people who like socks and blankets and candlelight and want to justify it with a trend. This is essentially a Malcolm Gladwell picture book for children. And also something I would want to read before going to Copenhagen or hosting a theme party. Light. Joyful.
The concept that this book is written around is very interesting, and I enjoyed seeing the insight into how Danes emobdy this word in their everyday life. It had some feel-good moments (how hyggeligt), but the book was a bit repetitive and a little bit shallow. I wouldn't recommend buying the physical book, but if you have the chance to snag it on Kindle for cheap, it's worth a quick read.
Interesting concept but information is repeated over and over. I enjoyed the statistical info but everything else felt like it could have been a quick news article, not a whole book.
Hygge is a Danish concept for cosiness, soothing experiences, and in general happiness in the small moments of the day. It can be accidental such as enjoying a particularly wonderful sunset at the end of the day. More often, hygge is intentionally cultivated. This could be inviting over a few close friends to enjoy a cup of hot cocoa and light conversation in front of the fireplace. The Little Book of Hygge teaches of about the idea of hygiene and how to create it in our lives.
In general the book was very informative and pleasant. Some of the examples were a bit more challenging to apply to my life, living in the States. Other ideas were already in place in my life. I wish the book was longer and went into more detail.
I enjoyed listening to the audiobook read by the author. His passion, manner of speech and explanation of the information enhanced the listening experience for me. The ideas of cups of cocoa in front of the fireplace, playing board games with close friends, spending hours cooking homemade jams, and then enjoying the scrumptious food afterwards sounds lovely. The book inspires me to make myself cozy and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. In fact, while listening to the audiobook, I pulled out my watercolors and enjoyed a relaxing afternoon of painting.
Overall, The Little Book of Higgle was a quick enjoyable read that reminded me to really enjoy the small cozy moments each day.
