Needs a sequel, too many unanswered questions. But some excellent world building at work.

Ok the beginning a was a little bit slow but I understand that it was to set up all these characters.  But once that ball got rolling HOY BOY did that ball take off!! So good!! Reached 1/3rd of the way in and I couldn’t put it down!  Likable and fleshed out characters with good writing. Cool sci-fi with a little bit of mystery and a touch of horror! Gay! And nby representation! Well developed relationships (and not just romantic ones)! //SPACE PIRATES// (not really but absolutely very much so). Can’t believe this is the authors first book! I would SO read a sequel if she wrote one!!

I really wanted to love this book. However it just didn’t happen.
The book started off strong. The world building was extensive however for me the world building never did anything for the actual story. Our main character (or who I thought was supposed to be the mc) Ocean just lacked for me. At the start Ocean was our focus and then the plot turned this way and that and I lost where Ocean went. More characters got added in that were forgettable.
The actual synopsis of this book was only 40%. The other 60% I could not tell you what it was supposed to give the reader. Elaine Cho has potential! I know this is a debut so I will def see what else they put out there in the future.

i’m so excited for the second book! i didn’t realise it was a series so the fast ending took me by surprise, but i felt it was a good ending for a stand-alone too.

i enjoyed the characters and their relationships a lot, established and developing ones. their different journeys and feelings of belonging (or not) weave together compellingly AND there are badass space races. the action and intrigue go hand in hand, i’m very keen to see how the sequel goes.
