What I really enjoy about Hearne's writing here is that he doesn't shove the romance plot down our throats. Atticus is allowed to have a moment here and there to wish he could see Granuaile without himself being made to go to her and be her protector. Likewise, the Fierce Druid is allowed to have her own subplot and epiphany into her own self without it being guided or immediately tied to Atticus. Owen is not driven to try and protect Greta as The Female and in fact even says in his own voice that he appreciates how strong and real she is.
The climactic fight was a fun, frantic read as I devoured page after page of Atticus' narrative of events. As always, the epilogue offered closure and a smile. I agree with the sentiments of the Druids that the Hounds are a happy addition to their lives, keeping them on the path with their innocence and ability to live in the present while undiluted commentary is given.
It made me happy to see Granuaile sticking to her proverbial guns on the issues that drove her to become a Druid in the first place: protecting Gaia against the current/modern age that is doing damage. Atticus has lived too long and has become content with the idea of protecting only the elementals that ask him for aid; Granuaile wants to be more proactive and right wrongs against Gaia that have gone on for decades.
Atticus’s war against the vampires continues in this book. Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed Atticus and Oberon’s chatter during his adventures on his quest to destroy Theophilus, the ancient vampire that convinced the Romans to destroy druids thousands of years ago. There is plenty of tension and intrigue as Atticus maneuvers against friends and foes alike. Sometimes, I felt bad for Atticus, since all he wanted was to stay under the radar but somehow he always gets dragged into these conflicts.
I’m not entirely sure where the author is going with Owen’s story. It saddened me what happened to Owen and the wolf packs, but since Owen is definitely staying with the wolves, I wonder how much of a role he’ll play in the future books.
I’m not the biggest fan of Granuaile and Orla. Maybe because I am so used to Atticus’s and Oberon’s voices after so many books, listening to Granuaile and Orla just sounds wrong and uncomfortable somehow. It is not Luke Daniel’s fault, he is a fantastic narrator, but personally I just can’t get used to them. I feel like the author is trying to make Granuaile and Orla into another Atticus and Oberon and it’s just not working.
Overall, I think this was an improvement compared to the previous book. The plot moves fast enough to keep the reader engaged and there is more Atticus and Oberon time. There wasn’t much about Ragnarok in this book so I think in the coming books the author may focus more on the Ragnarok plot.
Grandewail is finaly becoming an interesting on her own.
Oberon is still awesome.
Owen is still funny.
Aticuse is still as good as beffor.
Going into this book, I had kind of hoped for more exchanges between Lief and Atticus because I'm a huge Shakespeare nerd and those scenes always made me smile. That said, I think that this book allows for more of them in future exchanges. This is yet another great installment in a fantastic series. Hearne recommends reading a short story about what happens to the characters between the end of the last book and the beginning of this book, but I didn't really feel it was necessary. I wasn't lost at any point due to not reading it.
As is common to Atticus, he really steps in it a few times in this book and those mistakes have repercussions. One of which is that he gets another werewolf pack leader killed. I teared up a bit at his banishment from the Tempe and Flagstaff packs' territories. I understand it and damn if I wouldn't do the same, but it still feels like Atticus is losing all of this allies. I have a feeling that at some future point, there will either be a showdown between the wolves and Atticus or there will be some situation in which one of them really needs the other and they come to some agreement.
I really liked the new weapon that Owen got and all of his fight scenes were very enjoyable. Granted, he got his butt handed to him a bit, but they were great. I initially thought I wouldn't like his character at all, but he continues to grow on me. And Granuaile? Wow. She does get a little cocky with her Druidic powers and pays for it, but overall, she kicks butt this time and really does everything she sets her mind to. I love her and was so happy that she and Atticus were finally together at the end, even if it's a short reunion.
Last, my absolute favorite moment in the book is when Granuaile FINALLY gets the answer to her question. I read Leif's answer multiple times, overcome with giggles each time. Thanks, Kevin Hearne. I feel like you wrote this book just for that scene.
