Kevin Hearne

4.08 AVERAGE

As usual, Kevin Hearne has written an extremely compelling, entertaining story. The Iron Druid series is in my top three series' ever, so I was looking forward to this book with great anticipation. I lost count of the number of times I cracked up laughing - and considering I was listening to this as an audiobook, that wasn't such a good thing as I was on the highway.

I do have one little bone to pick about this book, and this is the reason this book is getting a measly 3 out of 5 stars, instead of a 5 out of 5. If it weren't for this one issue, it would have rated a 5 out of 5: misinformation. I read that Kevin actually traveled to Europe to make sure he was getting details right for the book... so if you're going to go to all that effort, WHY OH WHY couldn't you go to the effort needed to get the rest of the book correct too?!?

What am I talking about? The oil and gas industry, of course. Here's where the spoilers come in, but if you've clicked the link to unhide the review, you've had fair warning. Towards the end of the book, Granuaile uses her abilities as a druid to get revenge on her stepfather, gumming up the works of his oil wells and drills, and effectively shutting down his business. And you know what? I get that. I completely understand the feeling of having family members who treat you like crap or pay absolutely NO attention to you, and I get why she wanted to get revenge on him. But he just had to extend it to going on and on with misinformation about the industry in general. And here's what I mean: people go on and on about how the oil and gas industry is the most horrible thing ever; it's the scourge of the planet and needs to be shut down RIGHT NOW and forever. And it's really not. It's not great, no. Also, keep in mind that I'm speaking from the point of view of someone who is a freaking neo-druid herself. But my husband also works in the oil and gas industry, and I'm in a related job (working at a trades college that trains people for the O&G industry). Shutting down the oil & gas industry wholesale overnight is a really stupid, really bad idea, and completely unfeasible, to boot. As an end goal? Sure. And in the long term, the earth needs to take precedence, but in the short term? People need to take precedence. The amount of harm that would be done to the world by just shutting down the entire industry in one fell swoop would be enormous and devastating, and is just plain WRONG. I'm not going to go into it all here, but if you're curious, you're welcome to contact me. I've done my research; I'm not talking out of my ass here.

Loved Loved Loved Loved!

Good as usual. At first I didn't like the way he separated the three main's into different voices/chapters, but it worked well in this book- each voice seems more distinct now, especially Owen's.

A lot of words, yet not much happens. This series seems to drag the longer it goes on, and Atticus is mainly to blame. He's an uninteresting smuck, and I long for the day the series is without him.

This will be the least substantial review anyone will see me post. That aside, this series is the rock-god written ultimate for a mythology geek like myself. I think that the only difference between myself and Atticus / Siodachan is genetic background and that my (pretty much half) Irish ancestry comes from what I call "Viking Irish".

Is it a little pat? Yes. Obviously Mr. Hearne, while having tremendous fun writing his exceptional characters and intricate plots, is getting a little tired of the whole workings of the system. The headspace / language connection for magic is bloody brilliant (and an incentive for me to learn both Mandarin and Spanish as well as German and Yiddish), and I think the character development is spot-on. Do I want to meet Atticus and Granuaile (and even Owen?) Hell, yes. I could even pretty accurately predict what would happen at a party between all of us.

I've been waiting for this for the better part of the year Mr. Hearne - especially the geek pop culture references. I hope the finale lives up - otherwise you WILL find the droids you're looking for. And I'm half Hammer of God (albeit, much, much more polytheistic), half druid - we'll see what I can deal with metal and intelligence...

I love this series, but Luke who does the audio book makes it even better every character is brought to life so individually. Oberon will forever be my favorite part.

Loved the book, we covered all 3 druids in this book but everything tied together nicely. Owen's chapters were funny in the beginning which made me really happy. I mean, vampire-cide is interesting but not as many jokes. The step-dad story was blah but I was never really interested in it to start. I like Granuaile but always felt her reason for becoming a druid was weak.

I love this series! This was a good one.

Aye this series. I feel like I'm reading the same book over and over. Some god is seeking revenge on Atticus for something stupid he did in the previous book. He is then warned not to do anything else that's stupid and would cause chaos. He does anyway. A vampire betrays him. He and his cohorts thwart the bad guys temporarily as they know some god will seek revenge soon for whatever it is that he did this time. Rinse and repeat. And now Owen is a MC and gets his own chapters, and I just do not care anything about him at all.
