Extra star for the twists I didn't see coming but think this book might be a bit overhyped.

My only complaint about this book was how hard it was to read the last 75 pages while crying.

Really moving, engrossing historical fiction about two women best friends, one a pilot and one a spy, during World War II. The narrative unfolds very cleverly:
Spoilerthe further you read, the more you realize how unreliable the narrator is, and the more you guess at what might be going on behind that narrative.
Wein's writing evokes the horrors of wartime, the intensity of the two women's friendship, and the joy of flight and comraderie.

I still want Wein to write more Aksum books but this novel is definitely no mere consolation prize.

So good. SO GOOD.
Sassy, female protagonist flying planes over occupied France during WWII? Check.
Diabolical Nazis facing eventual comeuppance? Check.
Beautiful, tragic writing that made this reviewer literally crumple the pages of the library book with tears? Sniff, check.
Read it!

The story of two girls during WWII, fighting for England and ultimatley the Resistance. I'm going to be unpopular with members of my book club, but I didn't find the twist 1) shocking or 2) very surprising. Sorry guys!! However, this book was hellah enjoyable, and I had a great time reading it.

Don't mind me I've just got an ENTIRE FOREST IN MY EYE /sobs

This was such an easy, delightful read. Sort of a book club type of book and I mean that in a good way. A testament to friendship.

I loved how I couldn't predict where this story was taking me. The narrative is full of twists and turns.

I really appreciated the non-linear, anecdotal style of storytelling, which focuses on the development of the friendship between Maddie and Julie and the career paths they chose in World War II as an airplane pilot and a spy.

Both main characters were compelling and complex. I loved the themes of female ambition, friendship and heroism.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an intriguing read about brave women in World War II.
