At its core "Code Name Verity" is a book about the friendship of two women during World War II. Along the way the reader learns a lot about pilots and secret british operations in the occupied France and also some nasty details about the Germans. The strongest parts though were the characters and every heartbreaking moment had me at the edge. I was reliving them and it felt very real.

It took me some time to get into the book, the first 70 pages with all the background information were not so interesting but when the weeks in 1943 are finally covered and after some unexpected revelations I couldn't put it down.

Recommended.

I don't really know how I truly feel about this book. It felt like every time I picked it up to read it put me to sleep.

But the subtle nuances in the story that Verity is weaving all comes together at the end. I did cry.

However, I felt a lot of the plane jargon could have been cut out or shorter and we could have seen more of behind enemy lines

I listened to this as an audiobook on Audible. The narrators were really good. This is just not my typical type of book and I found myself loosing interest. But I think I’d you are a lover of historical fiction that you would really enjoy it!

I finally, finally finished this book. I think I have been trying to read it for a year. I listened to parts and read through the end. The audio book was helpful when reading the military terms that the main character refers to.

This is a book about a female pilot and a female spy who were active during world war 2. Their stories are told first through a confession that the spy is writing for her nazi captures. Both characters are full of spunky personality and may inspire young adults who are interested in going into the armed forces. I am not the audience this book was written for.

I wasn’t sure if this would be yet another gung ho tale of WWII derring-do, but it’s so much more than that. The two main characters are female, and from different backgrounds, but end up becoming firm friends who get brought into the world of special operations. It’s a book of two halves, where each writes their notes / confessions / diaries and so the story unfolds from two completely different perspectives. Although not wholly historically accurate (it’s fiction, after all) it’s clearly been extensively researched and beautifully written. You really do become invested in the outcomes for both of them, one of whom is a prisoner of the Gestapo. I loved it. An easy read (prose wise) and a more challenging one in terms of themes.

oh my goodness.... took so freakin long to finally get interesting.... like around page 250 or so. however, most of it left me so stinkin confused. if it had not been required reading, i would have put it down without finishing it. blah! so totally wanted to like it. but i didnt.
