Code Name Verity is a book that has made me think and I will continue to think, and think, and think and think about this book forever. And my heart will bleed a little bit each time I think about.

The first half of the book leaves the reader feeling a little bit like, well, an idiot. There are names and terms and locations and wonderful, WONDERFUL vernacular that are staggering and befuddling but also tantalizing. Tantalizing enough to help the reader make it to the section of the book where, suddenly, they are given the key and the brilliance of Code Name Verity shines through.

I loved how the characters each had their own vernacular depending on where they were from, who they were around, and what they had experienced. It’s a detail that Elizabeth Wein nailed, just every so nicely. It really gives the reader the perspective of how people cope with war, loss, pain and turmoil. How, inevitably, the fight becomes tiring, the realization that there isn't anyone to whole place the blame on wears you down, and how in the end humanity turns back to one another to fix the wrongs.

Each and every character is complex, unique and flawed in a way that only someone who has great insight into humanity can write about. The real wonderment of Code Name Verity is its commentary on relationships. Yes PEOPLE are important, FRIENDSHIP is important, and human interaction is important. Every person inevitably touches the lives of those around them. Like Maddie says, "Those ripples in the pond again-it just doesn't stop in one place. All those lives that have touched mine so briefly-most of them I don't even know their real names".

On of my favorite things about Code Name Verity is, by far, the author, Elizabeth Wein, who only wanted to write a book about women who could fly and be spy's during WWII. The humanity just leaked out around the edges of a story about two best friends who flew giant airplanes to secretive places in war during a time when they weren't supposed to.

I feel...conflicted. I think? Definitely need to let this one simmer for a bit before writing my review. One thing though, unreliable narrators, FTW!

Heartbreaking, tragic, and then all at once - cried multiple times. Loved being able to work through the mystery of the underlined phrases. It was sincerely satisfying to be curious in part one because it paid off in part two.
