Very good start to a series! Lots of world building and exposition but once it all clicks it gets very good. Had some strange writing sometimes which took me out and that’s why it’s not a 5 but it’s super good anyway. Recommend to fantasy readers

Took me a while to finish because I was getting frustrated with how long the beginning chapters were. But boy was I wrong to get so frustrated! This book was amazing! The world building was incredible! Such detailed imagination.
Kaladin is my favorite.

5/5 ★'s
It's been so long since I've felt this much emotion around a book. I can picture 12-year-old me picking up Eragon for the first time and diving into the world of Fantasy and Dragons, completely mystified by what the genre had to offer. I so so so so wish I had stumbled onto the writings of Brandon Sanderson in high school; I would have been obsessed (and really annoying about it).
The Way of Kings lived up to all the hype that was presented to me. I found myself eagerly reading, desperate to see how the story would evolve. To my surprise, I shed tears as I witnessed Kaladin Stormblessed completely transform into the leader he was meant to be. I must have reread the climax of chapter 67 one hundred times, feeling so giddy each time.
The character development was outstanding. Each chapter would end with a mini cliffhanger that would make me scream, begging for the next chapter to be from the POV of the previous one. Kaladin's character—the trauma he endured, hitting rock bottom, and then climbing with the help of his friends and Syl—his final stand on the Shattered Plains—there were so many satisfying moments. Apparently, each book in the Stormlight Archive is meant to represent the POV of a specific character, where we get to learn more about their past. The Way of Kings was Kaladin's story, and it ripped out my heart. Although Kaladin was the main character, other characters' stories, like Shallan's and Dalinar's, still had a strong hold on my attention. Shallan's story offered intellectual insights as we got to learn about her studies with Jasnah Kholin, with some secrets teased that made me wonder more about her past. While Dalinar Kholin's story expanded on the lore of Roshar and portrayed the honorable knight, uplifting good morals.
I gave the book 5 stars because of the pull and effect it had on me. Any book that leaves that kind of lasting impact deserves the highest rating I can give. Does that mean it was perfect? No, at times there were definitely lulls in the story progression. At some points, I felt the story was staying in the same spot for too long. Although it did anchor itself in certain chapters, I still felt it flowed well. It made me want to jump into the next page. And if you're looking for a more action-packed novel, there's not much of that in the book, which may seem odd in a world with magical knights, big swords, and huge plates of armor.
I was originally intimidated by the size of this book. At 1,008 pages, I was very hesitant at first. But by the 50% mark, I was hooked and trying to squeeze in any extra time to finish the novel. I’m so excited to start Words of Radiance and continue the story. I can’t wait to learn more about each of the heroes' journeys.
