My son knows what it’s like to feel different, so I appreciate stories that encourage kids to support and celebrate differences. To me this is a book about giving children the gift of supporting them, whoever they are, even if they’re not doing what society expects. A book about finding your kid their people, their community, and making sure they know that you and that community will help them. And the art is gorgeous.

This is a damn gift. POC, LGBTQ+, supportive figure who isn't the conventional mom or dad. I love this so much I can hardly put it into words.

Love the pictures in this book. The story is so beautiful. I love that the grandma is so understanding of her grandson. That is true love.

No wonder so many people were celebrating this book!  From its  honest narrative to its colorful illustrations, this picture book is something to behold.  It preaches being true to one's self, accepting each other, and finding inspiration in the daily.  This book is a breath of fresh air--something worthy and something uplifting.  It's great for the child who loves mermaids, who loves art, and who loves exploring their interests.  Perfect for grades 1-4.
