First of all let me say if you like things a little more open ended I think you will enjoy this more than I did. I felt like although things got wrapped up I still didn’t get the WHY of it all.

There were two timelines in this book. One follows Noemi in a modern day setting who is dealing with a life that never really worked out for her and a sudden death that made everything worse.

The second is her uncle Louie in the 80s and unfortunately for Noemi both timelines are really both about him and he is a far more compelling pov character.

Both timelines center around strange occurrences that might be possession, angry spirits or maybe nothing supernatural at all. There’s a lot of room for interpretation here.

I think this would be a good one for a book club and would recommend to people who liked crimson peak, and the haunting of hill house both the tv series and the book

I absolutely loved Louie’s chapters, and Noemi’s truly seemed to drag. I understand that this reflects the essence of balance that the book follows, but Louie’s story was that much more compelling too. Noemi was the low somber story to Louie’s scary and unexplainable. Wonderfully written with some really spooky moments and tragic endings.

I usually don't rate books I don't like - what doesn't work for me may be perfect for another reader! - but this book is so violently fatphobic that I'm still thinking about it months later.
So the fat character kills his mother by... sitting on her???... and then hides her body in the couch and... continues to sit on her decomposing body?????
In addition to that, the narrative can't stop pointing out how laughably fat this man is and how slovenly he is and how all he can do is eat.  And for what purpose?  The author could have chosen literally any other character composition to drive the plot.
