I’m not sure I can adequately describe what I loved about this book, but I will try.

First, the HORROR. I realized while reading this that I hadn’t read horror in a hot minute. I physically responded - changing my sitting position the moment the horror climaxed. At the end of one particular chapter, I yelled audibly at the book. Yelling with love, not anger. Haha

Secondly, the CHARACTERS. Nick Medina always does a brilliant job with creating characters that feel so real. It’s so easy to picture them, feel with them, and journey with them. Louie has easily become one of my all time favorite characters. I wanted desperately to hop into the story, and make sure he was taken care of!

Thirdly (and lastly), much like Sisters of the Lost Nation, this book paints a vivid picture of the realities facing Native American communities. I think what impressed me so much was how it was done in the most flawless storytelling fashion. You meet the characters, you love them, you journey with them, face hardships with them, and only afterwards do you remember there was a lesson there.

I read this book twice, back to back, because I didn’t want to leave it yet. How a horror novel felt cozy is beyond my understanding, but it definitely did. I’ll be thinking about it for awhile.

4.5 stars for Nick Medina’s “Indian Burial Ground”

Medina takes us back to the fictional Louisiana Takoda reservation and gives us some familiar characters from his Sisters of a Lost Nation, with a lot more horror. A spooky and disturbing tale that blends Takoda legends and fables with supernatural elements, interweaving them with the all too real heartbreak of addiction and suicide, the story follows Louie and Noemi, an uncle and niece, and goes back and forth between the past and the present as Louie recalls one horrific summer with events that are eerily similar to a current tragedy.

I was drawn into the story and loved the horror aspect as well as the Takoda creation story and other legends woven throughout the book. This is a book you’ll want to buddy read with someone. There are so many things to discuss, and even better if your buddy has read Sisters of a Lost Nation! The supernatural vs. real horrors, how the past is influencing the present, and the characters in both novels are some good starting points. In the end I couldn’t determine if Louie was haunted by something real or something in his own mind, and what would be scarier? Which one is harder to escape, and did he?

I received a free Kindle version of this book through Goodreads Giveaways, which in no way influenced my rating or review. Thank you Goodreads! Nick Medina is an automatic TBR, and I look forward to his next novel.

I tried Sisters of the Lost Nation and couldn’t get into that. Tried this, about 11% and gave up. I’m not sure why I can’t get into it but I just might not click with the author.
